Septembers Monthly final table played October

The game was played on Wednesday 12th October with 9 players plus the 1st reserve to give us our table of 10. Billy Pegram who had qualified for this final was away on holiday. This game started out very tight and remained so for the 1st hour before a few chances were taken by the adventurous, however some of the adventurous players soon perished and by the end of 90 minutes we had lost 2 with 3 more going in the next hour, the remaining 5 played very tight but it was Neil Wedgewood who won through in the end beating Shaun Scholey in the heads up, as Neil had already qualified he now doubles up in chips and Shaun gets the 8th seat on the yearly final table, well done both.

Augusts Monthly final table played September

Augusts monthly final was played on Wednesday 14th September, as usual the atmosphere was tense but good humoured with everyone trying to get that seat in the yearly final. As always there were early casualties and also the die hard tight players who wouldn't give anything away, eventually it came down to Peter Gibson and Billy Pegram, two good friends but arch rivals and keen competitors in any sport or activity they take part in, after a bit of see - saw play with chips going back and forth it was Billy who finally clinched it to secure his seat on the yearly final table, commiserations to Peter after a well played game and well done to Billy.

Junes Monthly final table played July

Junes monthly final was played on Wednesday 13th July, there were 9 players with both subs being brought in as 2 were away, the game set off very light hearted and very friendly with some cautious play by all concerned, despite all the usual banter the early chip leaders were Richard Hocking, Andrew Renwick and myself. Play rocked to and fro for the first hour with the 3 chip leaders keeping abreast of the field. Into the second hour the first casualties hit the deck including Richard who had a bad run and some hard luck, I increased my lead until I met up with Ken Brown who took me for a very large pot which put him in the lead, and that was how it stayed until we got down to 3, Mike Hawkins took ken for a big one which put all three of us on about the same chip level, ken then got hit hard and taken out which left Mike and myself heads up. At this stage I was ahead with a 2 to 1 chip lead but Mike pulled back until we were about evens, I picked up pocket sixes and hit trips on the flop to edge in front once more, the final hand went my way and with less than 10000 chips between us it was close. Well done to Mike who has now qualified for the final table while I double up on chips, with only 4 places now left one of which will be filled by the overall points leader it is looking like it will be a fantastic line up at the years end, it should be interesting to see who makes the last 3 table places.

May Monthly final table played June

Mays monthly final was played on Monday 13th June. Due to several people not being able to make the Wednesday it was moved to the Monday to suit all those concerned. Unfortunately the new date was no good for Ken and he was not able to make it. The 2 reserves also never turned up leaving a 9 seat table. However that did not mean the game went any quicker despite 2 early knock-outs. Len was first to fall as Peter stamped his authority on the game early on. Jason soon followed after being relatively card dry. After the break the game started to turn and Paul started to amass chips by taking some big hands. I myself clawed my way back into the game with the double knockout of Billy and Gary Routledge. Bets were flying round with some big hands being hit until there was just 3 of us left. Paul having a big chip lead got locked into a hand with Peter and felt his luck was in. He wasn't wrong as the cards fell for him yet again leaving myself and Paul in a heads up with Paul now a good 4 to 1 chip lead. A game of ping pong started as chips went back and forth and the blinds soared. It was pushing midnight and possibly turning into the longest monthly final heads up ever, I'd had more comebacks than Lazarus and the bar was trying to close. But in the end Pauls dominance showed and he finally beat me making him the 5th Monthly finalist. Well done Paul next time I will work you harder still.

April Monthly final table played May

With the season well and truly under way 11th May saw 10 players gathered for another monthly final showdown, April had been a 5 week month so there had been plenty of chances for major upsets on the points challenge but with the exception of Billy Pegram position 13 in the overall points table and Nigel White 28th the other 8 players were all in the top 10. It was yet another well mannered game with plenty of early action and a few changes in fortune but by half time Wedgy had established himself as a strong candidate by amassing a large chip stack. As ever Wedgy is a very steady player who quite often knows when to push and when to hold back and this game was to be no exception to that format with some very well timed bets and pushes he took the lead and never lost it. Well done Wedgy on becoming the 4th finalist.

March Monthly final table played April

The 13th April saw our third monthly final with 9 players out of the qualifying 10 being able to make it down for the game therefore Dave Rob was pulled in as first reserve, I remember Dave came in with a disgruntled attitude apparently it had something to do with his day, (I didn't ask) and although he did not bring an attitude to the table somehow I think it had an overall effect on his style of play. From being a pretty steady and secure player for the most part he seemed to let loose with a devil may care approach and for the first hour or so it didn't benefit him at all and he became short stacked, but as always in poker expect the unexpected and he soon recovered dominating the table and then going on to win the game. It was on the whole an interesting game with a few twists and turns in fortunes but for none more so than Dave. Well done Dave for securing the third place on the final table.

February Monthly final table played March

9th March saw our second monthly final with 10 players all eager to win that coveted seat on the yearly, again it was a good humoured game but with some early casualties, the game tightened up with the last 5, Scott Ivison and yours truly (Dave Renwick) being the chip leaders, and so it remained as Scott and myself went heads up, it took another 30 minutes or so before I eventually won with a pair of queens to a busted straight draw, well done Scotty but even better done me as I take the second seat on the yearly final table.

January Monthly final table played Feb

9th February saw our first monthly final with 10 players vying for the 1st place on the yearly final table, it was a good humoured game with some tight play and some really lucky draws when it came to the flop with second best hand often winning  but as they say that is poker, the game slowed down with 4 players left but with some luck and plenty of good play Maurice Wigham took the honours and is the 1st qualifier for the yearly. Well done Maurice.

Congratulations to Paul Haig on winning the

2010 MPC Poker player of the year.

After what can only be described as a classic race for the top Paul battled it out for most of the year with his nearest rival Mike Hawkins, Paul secured his victory in the last couple of games by gaining enough points to ensure he couldn't be caught. Congratulations to Paul on what has been an excellent year for him, well done.

Paul Haig took the coveted title of MPC Poker player of the year 2010 with an impressive 743 points his nearest rivals were Mike Hawkins 724 and Andrew Renwick 676. All in all it was a riveting year with some excellent play and some new rising stars.
